It is time to talk about my favorite foundation cushion at the moment: Yves Saint Laurent Le Cushion Encre De Peau (Fushion Ink Cushion Foundation). I already spotted this cushion a while ago on Instagram and I immediately knew that I needed this in my life. Apparently this cushion was only available in Asia first, but slowly made it’s entrance into Europe like France and United Kingdom. I heard amazing things about this cushion and I had to find out if they were all true. Let’s get started!
Yves Saint Laurent is one of my favorite brands. Not only for the makeup but also perfume and fashion items (saving for a YSl clutch!). I always fall in love with their slick and beautiful packaging. It looks amazing on your vanity and a great collectors item. This cushion grabbed my attention at Instagram on a few blogger accounts that are based in Singapore: sophisticated black with a touch of gold! How pretty is this?

This is how the box looks like, the usual black and gold print from YSL. “Liquid foundation compact – all day wear. Flawless coverage, shine-free, moisturising freshness.”, that is a clear description of this cushion. But does it really work for my super oily skin?
At the back of the cushion you will find the description again. I picked out the color #40 out of the 6 shades they have. I’ve read that the colors of this cushion are made with “Asian colors”. So it means that if you purchased a YSL foundation before (I’m usually a B20/B25 with the YSL foundations) that you have to pick 1 or 2 tones darker than usual.
This is the puff. The material feels super soft and different from the Korean puffs that are included inside of the cushions. It has a more dense feeling to my skin instead of the rubbery feeling of the Korean puffs.
This is how the color shows up on the puff. It looks like a decent NW25/30 in my opinion, a little bit darker than I expected but this is not on my own skin ofcours! I little dab into the sponge is more than enough to get the right amount of product on your puff. The puff feels great when you hold it with 3 fingers and I don’t have the feeling that it slips away while I use the puff.
The moment I opened the security lid from the cushion I smelled a nice fragrance from the sponge. It has a pleasant smell but not too overwhelming like the usually liquid foundation fragrance. When a foundation contains SPF, it can smell different from other foundations. With this one I don’t experience that.
Okay, don’t be afraid of the color swatch here! I’m really tan here and usually my arms and chest are the area’s that get tanned first ( face white, chest and arms tanned, belly and legs white ….. ). If my summer tan will fade away, this color will suit me perfect! It has a pretty good coverage as you can see, I just swatched it one time at the back of my hand with my finger.
I always prime my skin first when I apply foundation. This summer I was obsessed with the Smashbox Photo Finish primer because it blurs out my pores and it makes my skin matte. Now the cold winter days are coming, I like to use the Too Faced Hangover Primer which gives your skin an extra hydration boost and it smells like coconut!
First start with dipping your puff into the sponge, a little touch is just enough. I like to start with one side of my face and then blend it all over my skin. I was really surprised how much coverage this cushion gives to your skin! I’m usually used to a more dewy finish with a medium/sheer coverage, but this cushion gives your skin an instantly velvety finish which doesn’t appear to dewy or dry. That’s why I never use a cushion because they always make my skin super oily. While I tap the puff on my face, I noticed that a lot of my redness around my nose were all covered. I start to love this cushion more and more.
When I finished applying the foundation on my face with the puff, my skin had a healthy finish. Usually my skin can look a little bit dry or patchy after applying foundation, but with the YSL cushion is looks perfect instantly after applying! Now I start to get afraid, because it looks healthy now ( a little bit glowy on my oily skin), but my skin always gets oily after a few hours even when I apply powder. Maybe you can already guess: my skin didn’t looked more oily than usual after a few hours. Some people have to accept that no product in the world can make their skin matte for the whole day. I’m one of those people. I’m already happy when my makeup doesn’t melt because of the amount of oil on my skin. So even tho this is a cushion with a velvet matte finish, it doesn’t keeps my face matte all day (BUT you have to know that I have a super oily skin, with some foundations I can look like a sweaty egg). I did noticed that my forehead and cheeks were more matte than usual, it was only my nose that got oily.
The color matched really well with my skintone. I didn’t notice if this foundation will oxidize after a while, but the color looked pretty good on my skin even after 6/8 hours. It looks a bit too pale for me now, but luckily the fall is coming now so my summer tan will fade away after a while. I’m just so happy with this color match because you can warm your face up with a bronzer if you think it is too light for you. I applied a bronzer on my cheeks, forehead and jaw line. It made it a bit more tanned and highlighted in the center of my face.
This is a really expensive cushion, so I was really curious if this worked for my skin type. I can say that the amount of money is totally worth the pretty packaging and the beautiful finish of this foundation cushion. It gives your skin a beautiful velvet matte finish which will stay the whole day! If you have combination skin, you will definitely love this cushion! People with dry of oily skin have to prep their skin to their own problems to make this cushion do its magic. I used a primer with a matte finish, which worked really well with this cushion. Only my nose got oily but the rest of my face kept its beautiful velvet finish. The coverage was medium but it didn’t look cakey or thick. It had just the perfect coverage to still make it look like skin. So everything they promised “flawless coverage, shine-free, moisturising freshness” is pretty much the truth. I’m not sure about the moisturising freshness, but I did noticed while I was applying the foundation that my skin felt more awake.
Now you may ask: is this the same as the Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint Encre De Peau foundation in the bottle? Absolutely not! I made a review about this foundation and I disliked it. This is a whole different foundation, I’m not sure why they gave it the same name. You can literally only use this foundation when your skin is perfect without any blemishes or dry patches. Otherwise it will only emphasize the imperfections.
Do you like the concept of a foundation cushion, but still didn’t find the perfect one? Are you looking for a foundation with a great coverage with a fresh finish, but you don’t want to get a shiny face at the end of the day? Are you an oily skin girl like me, but are you afraid to use a cushion because they are always too dewy for you? The Yves Saint Laurent Le Cushion Encre De Peau will be your perfect match!
What are your thoughts about this cushion?
