Mascara battle: Estée Lauder vs Maybelline

Mascara battle: Estée Lauder vs Maybelline

Hii everyone!

Today I am going to compare my favorite drugstore with my favorite high end mascara: Estée Lauder Sumptuous Bold Volume in Waterproof and the Maybelline The Falsies Volum’ Express in Waterpoof. I used these two mascaras more than over 4 years and I repurchased each of these more than 3 times. Lets take a look at which one is better!

I am always looking for the perfect mascara for my short, straight Asian lashes. Mine will never curl even when I use an eyelash curler. That’s why I always need to use a waterproof mascara so the curl will stay longer. Beside the curl my eyes have a weird shape so my mascara will always smudge underneath my eye. The perfect mascara is for me one that gives my lashes length, won’t smudge and holds the curl.

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Bold Volume in Waterproof and the Maybelline The Falsies Volum’ Express in Waterpoof

Estée Lauder is a beautiful brand. I discovered this mascara because I heard many good things about the original formula without the waterproof. In the Netherlands we have a great deal every other time at the store called Ici Parix XL were they offer you 40% on all mascaras (the last offer was 3 weeks ago, now they will change their discount to 30% instead of 40% *boe* ). That’s the time I try a couple of new mascaras and that’s how I noticed that this one does a lot for holding the curl, adding volume and length. The brush is something I am not really excited about it, it goes from wide to small. They could add more bristles to it but I can work with it. This mascara is €30,10.

Maybelline is one of my favorite drugstore brand! I tried all of their mascaras and they never disappoint me (except for the yellow “Colossal Volum”, that one doesn’t work for me). Usually I stock on the mascaras when one of the drugstores have an offer like 1+1. But here in the Netherlands they are quit expensive, while in the US you only pay half the price. So when I was in NYC I took a few with me. The brush is curved which should be easier to apply the mascara and pump up your lashes. The wand is also really flexible because right under the bristle they made a “gap” so the wand will move when you apply the mascara to create more volume I think. This mascara gives my literally everything I dreamed of, no complaints! This mascara is €16,99.

There are mine short Asian lashes. You can barely notice them.

Left: Maybelline – Right: Estée Lauder

I purchased both mascaras at the same time to make sure that the formula didn’t dry up.

On the left you see the results of the Maybelline mascara. The application went easy and I only needed to use 2 coats to cover my lashes and give them volume. I am sorry for my spider lashes but personally I like the look of having spider lashes because this is the only way to show them off. The formula is normal/dry which is good because your lashes won’t fall down while applying mascara and the curl will stay all day. The brush is easy to use and while brushing through my lashes it catches all the eyelashes. My under eye lashes look really long and I could reach them easily with my brush.

On the right you see the results of the Estée Lauder mascara. The application didn’t went as smooth compared to the Maybelline. My lashes won’t pick up the product immediately but after a few times and more than 3 coats my lashes were covered. This formula is more dry than the Maybelline which is maybe the reason why the product didn’t immediately showed up on my lashes. The brush is okay but they could improve it to add more bristles and make it more fluffy so your lashes will easily glide through the brush. My under eye lashes look just fine but I had a hard time to apply the mascara on there.

I think it is clear that the Maybelline wins! Before I wrote this blog I never noticed that they are so ‘similar’. I saw them as two totally different mascaras with both another formula and results. The Maybelline is first of all more affordable than the Estée Lauder. It’s almost half the price of it. The brush is better because I can reach every eyelash with that brush and even my under eye lashes are not problem at all. The formula is a little bit more wet than the Estée Lauder so the curl won’t stay that long, but this formula grabs the lashes better so you only need a few coats.

On Instagram I received a few times the question which mascara is my favorite. Usually I told them a few high end brands like Chanel en Estée Lauder, but for the drugstore brand I always tell them: try out the Maybelline Falsies Volum’!

I recommend everyone to try this mascara because if it works for my Asian lashes, why not on yours? The Estée Lauder is still one of my favorite, you can say that the Maybelline is a dupe of the Estée Lauder.

What is your favorite drugstore / high end mascara?

Thanks a lot for reading x
